Renaming of
Waianae Army Recreation Center
Hawaii's first Medal of Honor recipient, Pvt. 1st Class Herbert Kaili Pililaau, received another honor on December 12th when the Waianae Army Recreation Center is named after him.
Private Pilila'au was born in Wai'anae, Hawai'i on October 10, 1928. He joined the Army and was sent to Pia-ri, Korea. On September 17, 1951, only days before his 23rd birthday, Private Pililaau lost his life volunteering to cover for his withdrawing platoon, using all his ammunition and courageously defended his position by engaging the enemy fighting hand-to-hand with a bayonet and his fists before being overwhelmed and killed.
Dedication Ceremony on Friday, December 12, 2003 at the newly-renamed Herbert K. Pililaau Army Recreation Center in Waianae.
